How long would it take for me to lose weight if I stopped eating completely?

This is called ‘water fasting’ and wives tales describe it as instantly fatal, though the few times it has been professionally overseen it has been totally safe and free of side effects. As far as I can tell from the research I’ve done, there is nothing dangerous about it if done wisely.

If you want to know how long it will take to lose weight, you need to do a tiny bit of math. First, find your body fat percentage. For men this is probably around 30–35% for a typical American, whereas the lowest bodyfat should go is 10–15%. For women, add 10% because women’s bodies need more fat to stay alive.

So let’s say you’re aiming for a 15% drop from a starting weight of 240 pounds.

240 x 0.15 = 36 pounds

Fat is 3500 (k)calories per pound, so you’re looking for a running deficit of

36 x 3500 = 126,000 calories

Go online, find a TDEE calculator. Use that number in the equation below.

126,000 / TDEE = Number of Days Water Fasting

for example:

126,000 / 3000 = 42 days

That’s your number, using 3rd grade arithmetic.

Now try it for yourself!

What are your starting and goal body fat percentages?

weight loss

((Goal Bodyfat %) - (Current Bodyfat %)) x (Your Weight) = Fat Loss Goal

Fat Loss Goal x 3500 = Total Calorie Deficit

Total Calorie Deficit / TDEE = Days of Fasting to Goal

If it came out weird, check your decimal places.

The first two or three days will SUCK as your body runs our of blood sugar for fuel. Lots of lethargy, expect to be hangry, but by the end of day 3 that will all subside. Drink a big glass of water whenever you feel hungry. (Hence the name 'water fasting')

After 3 days the cravings should subside. If you still have cravings on day 5, call off the experiment, because that should not happen.

Daily vitamin caps are a good idea if you go more than a few days. Don't use gummies, they will spike your blood sugar and pop you out of ketosis.

Small snacks will keep you out of ketosis, causing your body to focus on sugars instead of switching to fats, which both sucks and resets your progress.

When you stop feeling hungry, you’re in ketosis and your body is getting energy from fat.

If you are water fasting, exercise will degrade your muscles. Stick to light yoga or yin, nothing strenuous.

When you start feeling hungry again, it is time to end the experiment. Don’t push it or your body will start eating muscle and organs. Seriously, don’t mess around.

When you end the experiment, do so gently. I hear starting with a single slice of watermelon is a really enjoyable way of doing it. A few hours later, have another couple of slices. The next day has a tomato soup. Seriously, ease back into eating. People rescued from prison camps who were given big meals literally died because they didn’t start out with light stuff. ALSO, grab some probiotics when you start eating again.
